Bell's Palsy

What is Bell’s palsy?

It is partial to full paralysis of the muscles of one side of the face, caused by compression, irritation or infection of the facial nerve as it exits the skull just beneath the ear. It is slightly mre common in the winter, as cold air frequently irritates the nerve.

What can physiotherapy do?

This is not a severe or lasting nerve injury, and has the capacity to heal completely. Physiotherapy treatment involves using electrical stimulation to produce facial muscle contraction, use of tape to maintain the contour of the face and avoid sagging, and various active or assisted exercise techniques to regain movement.
