Spine Conditions – Treatment by Healyos
About Spine Conditions
Spine conditions are mainly disorders that affect your body structure i.e. the backbone. It can occur as a minor discomfort or a major issue but these both are debilitating and can significantly impact your daily life. Spine conditions can be due to distress in the vertebrae, discs, muscles or nerves of the spinal column.
Table of Contents
Many problems arise from conditions of the spine. The following are some of the common Spine conditions:
- Herniated disc: The spinal disc has soft inner tissue that ruptures into the outer layer putting undue pressure on the surrounding nerves.
- Spinal stenosis: The nerves along the spinal cord are stressed due to the narrowing of the spinal canal.
- Sciatica: It is a pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, typically following the path from the lower back to the hips and finally reaching the legs.
- Degenerative disc disease: It is the natural wear and tear of the spinal discs or intervertebral disc as one ages.
- Osteoporosis: There is a weakness of the bones due to lower calcium content and low bone density that increases the risk of spinal fractures.
- Scoliosis: Abnormal sideways curvature of the spine that mostly happens during the growth spurt before puberty hits.
- Spondylolisthesis: A condition in which one of the vertebrae slips out of place and onto the vertebra below it.
- Osteoarthritis: It is a degenerative condition that causes pain and stiffness in the joints of the neck and lower back of the spinal cord.
- Kyphosis: When there is advanced anterior rounding of the back it often results in a hunched posture.
Symptoms of Spine Conditions
Spine conditions can manifest in various ways, depending on the type and stage of the condition. Some common symptoms seen often are-
- Throbbing or sharp back pain that can be persistent or occur frequently.
- A tingling sensation or numbing in the arms, hands or legs.
- Stiffness and pain in the neck which gradually radiates to the shoulders and reaches the arms.
- Weakness in the muscles that make carrying or lifting any object difficult.
- Restricted range of motion in the neck or back.
- Difficulty in gaining stability or while walking.
Causes of Spine Conditions
Spine conditions result due to the following causes:
- Wear and tear due to age factor: The spinal cord weakens naturally with age.
- Injuries: Accidents, falling, and sports may cause injury to the spine.
- Poor posture: Maintaining a wrong posture for a very long time would, of course, make the spinal muscles and ligaments tired.
- Obesity: Being overweight puts excess pressure on the spine.
- Hereditary: Some conditions are due to genetic reasons passed on to them via their parents.
When to visit a doctor for any Spine Condition?
While most conditions of the spine can be managed with self-care, you must seek the help of a doctor or health professional if you have:
- Severe or persistent back pain
- Numbness or weakness in the arms or legs
- Loss of control over bowel movements or the bladder
- Pain associated with fever or unexplained weight loss
Prevention of Spine Conditions
While some of these factors are beyond your control, several preventative measures can be taken to ensure your spine is in the best possible health. These include the following:
- Maintaining a healthy weight: Extra pounds put added stress on your spine.
- Working on good posture: Slouch less often and maintain good posture during sitting, standing, and lifting.
- Make regular exercise part of your regimen: Put some exercises into your routine that are likely to target core muscles and help increase flexibility.
- Ergonomic set-up: Organise the workspace in such a way that it does not burden the back unnecessarily.
- Proper Lifting Technique: Bring relief to your back by applying the correct techniques to lift.
