Tendinitis

What is a tendon?

A tendon is a fibrous band of tissue that attaches muscles to bone.

How does tendonitis occur?

Excess pulling forces on the tendon due to forceful muscle contractions or repeated movements can cause the tendon to become inflamed and irritated.

What does it feel like?

You will have pain during movement, and perhaps at rest. It worsens with activity.

You may notice some swelling and difficulty moving.

Should I apply ice or heat for tendinitis?

In the initial days after the injury, ice is better to reduce swelling and inflammation by temporarily reducing blood flow to the injured area. Avoid heat, as it does the opposite.

How is tendonitis treated?

  • Minor injuries heal on their own. More severe ones may require medication as well as physiotherapy to speed up recovery and ensure proper healing.

  • Physiotherapy will also help to prevent the injury from happening again.
